Fantastic Owlerton Greyhound Betting Sites

The best location for Owlerton greyhound betting is at the racecourse itself. Situated just five minutes from Sheffield’s city centre, Owlerton easily ranks as one of Yorkshire’s finest greyhound stadia. Featuring both daytime and night-time races, the stadium is a popular destination for both serious and casual punters. The stadium has been home to Rugby League and amateur football in the past, as well as speedway and stock car racing, which still takes place at Owlerton. But greyhound racing has been a mainstay at the venue, with the first races held there in 1932 with over 10,000 spectators present that day.

Being only a few miles from Sheffield, Owlerton is a popular destination for stag do’s and hen do’s. The venue is also a favourite venue for birthdays, given that when you register online with Owlerton, you can celebrate the occasion in style with a free 3-course meal in the restaurant or you can bag yourself a “6 pack” which consists of free admission, a drink, 2 bets and a basket meal.

Stadium Facilities

A great deal has changed at Owlerton since ‘Carbrook Ted’ won the Oxford Stakes by two lengths on opening night in 1932. The venue has spent massively on a modernisation project, and as a result, the facilities at Owlerton are state of the art. One of the highlights must be the Panorama Bar, which, as its name suggests, gives an unobstructed view of the finish line. Serving perhaps Yorkshire’s finest hot roast pork sandwiches accompanied by roast potatoes, regular visitors will tell you this alone is worth the visit. The bar also has its own Tote booth, so you don’t need to miss any of the action.

If you want to get up close and personal to the action, then the Paddocks Bar is the place to be. Featuring a trackside terrace, you can enjoy a drink or snack while being as close to the action as humanly possible. Alternatively, you can relax in the glass-fronted Panorama Restaurant and let a Tote runner place your bets while you sit back and enjoy the action. Unlike some other venues, when you book a table to watch Owlerton greyhounds, the table is yours for the duration of the event with no set dining times, allowing you to eat what you want when you want.

Interesting Facts about the Owlerton Stadium

During the summer months, visitor numbers surge at Owlerton, with over 4,000 extra visitors through the door. What is unique about these guests is that 50% are women and such is the popularity of the venue with female customers that the stadium introduced the country’s only greyhound racing Ladies Day. The event which takes place each July is so popular that the event organisers warn people to book in advance as it usually sells out very quickly. Perhaps to appease the many who are unable to go in person, the event is now live streamed each year via Owlerton Stadium’s Facebook page.

The history of Owlerton Stadium is an intriguing one as the venue was initially built for the sole purpose of motorbike speedway. When the stadium first opened in 1929 over 15,000 spectators flocked to watch dirt track racing at an event called The Golden Helmut. However, within a year visitor numbers had severely dwindled. The owners went bankrupt and the stadium was closed. A bid of £1,000 was accepted from a group of greyhound enthusiasts by the official receivers for the stadium, and the first greyhound race took place at Owlerton in 1932.

Racing continued at the venue until 1989 when the stadium was once again closed. This time it was on the orders of the local authority that punters had to find an alternative track, as they deemed the stadium didn’t meet safety standards. The check was prompted due to the tragic events at nearby Hillsborough, the home of local football team Sheffield Wednesday, where 96 football fans died in the FA Cup semi-final clash between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. The stadium closure was only temporary though, and racing resumed later that year. Two years later, a £3 million refurbishment secured the future of the venue.
