If you can’t visit the Swindon Greyhounds in person, you can bet on the races taking place at the tracks on one of the betting sites we feature on our home page. They are all licensed and regulated by the UK Gambling Commission, so that ensures safe and secure betting. New customers that use a site for the first time can enjoy a wide range of offers and promotions that are offered as a welcome bonus package. As Swindon has races for the 52 weeks of the year, there is always an event to bet on.

Swindon Greyhounds Stadium Facilities

The stadium boasts great facilities including a 140-seater restaurant, 2 snack bars, and 4 licenced bars. The restaurant packages include full table services with a member of the staff taking all the bets from your table and subsequently paying out any winning tickets. This convenient service allows you to enjoy the race meeting without all the stress and hassle of queuing up at a Tote kiosk.

Regular visitors to our site will by now know we are unashamedly foodies by nature, so the Saturday dining package ticks the right boxes as it includes a 3-course meal, admission, and race guide to the stadium.

A big selling point for families is that on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays both children and senior citizens enjoy free admission, so it needn’t cost the earth to go and watch the Swindon greyhounds. We love this and wish more tracks we have reviewed did this!

Swindon Greyhounds Track Events

Race events take place at Swindon greyhound track on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning while on Saturday, they take place in the evening. With up to 14 races per meeting, few venues in the country offer such value for money. The turnstiles open one hour before the races start and the stadium closes its doors at about 2 pm on weekdays and 10:15 pm on Saturdays. Swindon is an all-weather stadium with large indoor areas that have television coverage. The distances raced here include; 260m, 460m, 480m, 480m with huddles, 509m, 685m, 737m, and 932m.

One of the biggest races in the arena is the British Produce Stake that has been taking place since 1946. It was originally held at Eastville Stadium in Bristol but moved to its current home in Swindon in 1998. It is a 480m flat race, and uniquely it is only open to British bred greyhounds only.

Interesting Facts about the Stadium

The current Swindon greyhound stadium will be replaced soon. The existing Abbey Stadium is quite frankly showing its age, and the owners have spent over a decade in consultation with local authorities to improve the site. The development will see some houses placed in the vicinity, but the council have warned the developer not to build any houses on the site until it is ready, fearing the houses may be built but not the stadium. The new venue is already built, it was completed last year and due to the prefabricated design, will be moved from its present location in Port Talbot in Wales once the site is ready. Racing will continue uninterrupted until the change.

The first greyhound racing to take place at the venue was an independent race in which a dog called “Don’t Care“ won the first 324-yard race in a time of 19.02 sec. The site later came into the hands of the Bristol Greyhound Racing Association who also had control of Oxford and Eastville (Bristol) stadium at the time.

While Swindon dog racing didn’t take place until 1952, the venue itself opened its doors in 1949 to host speedway races, and the site still hosts motorbike racing today. Four-times world champion Barry Briggs rode for many years in the 1960s at Swindon and to this very day he is the only rider to average 10 points per meeting. It is an excellent venue for both greyhound and speedway racing.
