Despite the age of this historic stadium, it has recently had a major refurbishment that has given the venue a modern facelift. The glass fronted grandstand restaurant allows you to dine in style while enjoying the action on the track.

No visit to Birmingham would be complete without enjoying a curry, and Perry Barr caters to this by offering an exceptional Balti experience. And while the curry may make you sweat, you won’t be out of breath placing your bets as the venue provides a Tote runner to place these for you.

If you are planning a special occasion and have a group of 10 or more, then Perry Barr offers a ‘Party Room’ which provides privacy but also access to a bar that isn’t open to the general public. Perry Barr Greyhounds Track Events

Racing at Perry Barr greyhound track takes place in the daytime on Sunday, Monday, Thursday and Saturday. The first race is at 2pm on Sunday, 11am on Monday and Thursday and 10:30am on a Saturday. Remarkably the admission is free for all the daytime races which makes it one of the best value tracks we have reviewed. The prestigious Saturday night meeting is £8 per person, but senior citizens and children under 11 can attend for free.

The 660m St Leger is the standout event and has had a long and illustrious history. First held at Wembley Stadium in 1928, the race moved to Wembley Greyhound stadium in 1999. When Wembley closed on 25th March 2017, owners GRA (Greyhound Racing Association) switched the event to its current home of Perry Barr. Although it has traditionally offered a lucrative prize pot, financial problems and the loss of TV coverage has meant a reduction in this figure in recent years. The race has been held at a variety of distances. At Wembly stadium between 1927 – 1974 it was a 640m race, 655m between 1975 – 1998, 1999 – 2002 660m, 698m between 2003 – 2009, 2010 – 2016 it was 687m, and when it moved to Perry Barr in 2017 the current longer length of 710m was chosen. This, of course, suits dogs with stamina rather than sprinters.

Interesting Facts about the Greyhound Stadium

Perry Barr, in many ways, breaks the mould for a greyhound stadium. While it is not unusual for motorbike speedway racing to originate in or to share a stadium with dog racing, Perry Barr is a rare exception in the fact that speedway racing is a new addition to the venue. The track was laid in 2007 and is now the home of the aptly named speedway team, Birmingham Brummies. Initially, Birmingham had two speedway teams with the Birmingham Brummies being based at Perry Barr and the other team, Birmingham Bulldogs located at Hall Green Stadium (which closed in 2017 and is now a housing estate). The team has had a stop-start history, disbanding in 1953 but reforming in 1971. This only lasted for 12 years before once again stopping racing. The yo-yo existence continued, and the team moved to Bordesley Green (two miles east of the city centre) but only lasted two seasons before once again disbanding in 1986. After a 20-year hiatus, the Birmingham Brummies returned to Perry Barr, and in their first season, they finished runners-up in both the league and the Premier Trophy.

The stadium has a long and interesting history. Formerly home of Birchfield Harriers, the venue was purposely built for athletics. Visitors to Perry Barr can still see the emblem of the Harriers at the entrance of the venue (a running stag that was carved in 1929). Cycling was the main event in the mid-thirties and it was also the training ground for the reserve teams for Aston Villa Football Club. The outbreak of World War 2 saw the venue requisitioned by the authorities. The stadium housed the British Home Guard for the area and towards the end of the war was used to home captured Italian POW’s. Despite the war being effectively over on the 8th May 1945, Italian prisoners stayed on the site until January 1946. The stadium re-opened a month later to host speedway events. The stadium still held athletics events, and Perry Barr’s claim to fame is that it was the first venue in the UK to hold an event with floodlights, this occurred in 1948. In 1977, Birchfield Harriers moved to a new home, the newly constructed Alexander Stadium.
