Yarmouth Greyhounds Stadium Facilities

Great Yarmouth is a top-rated holiday destination, and anybody over the age of 30 has likely either stayed at the Haven holiday park in the area or been on a caravan holiday to Yarmouth. With a regular stream of visitors to the area, the Yarmouth stadium operators have an excellent record of investing in the venue.

In 1969, the Raceview restaurant opened and was able to cater for 3,000 people. This is a massive number of people and shows how popular the venue was as well as the level of confidence the owners had in the stadium.

Over the years the stadium not only hosted Yarmouth dog racing but was also used for speedway racing, bingo nights, stock car racing (which still takes place) and held a very popular Sunday market.

The last major refurbishment was completed in 2006, and that saw the building of a spectacular £2.5 million grandstand as well as a new restaurant and executive boxes. The 250-seater restaurant may be a lot smaller than the previous one but has all the facilities you would expect for the modern day.

During the week only, main meals are served in the restaurant, but a three-course option is available at the Saturday meeting. The food is of good quality (the braised lamb shank gets our vote!), and the restaurant affords great views of the racing. Each table also has a huge 50″ plasma screen above it, so it is almost impossible to miss any of the action. If you are more of a fast food person, then the ‘Five Good Things’ promotion could be the one for you. For just over a tenner you get admission with parking included, a hot dog, a pint, racecard and a £1 Tote bet.

Yarmouth Greyhounds Track Events

Racing at Yarmouth takes place every Monday and Thursday, doors open at 6pm with the first race starting at 6:20pm. There is also a Saturday meet, doors open at 6:30pm and the first race starts at 7pm.

The 462m East Anglian Derby is the Yarmouth greyhound track’s biggest race and has been held at Yarmouth greyhound stadium since its inauguration in 1975. The prize money of £15,000 makes the race one of the most sought after in the greyhound calendar. Legendary trainer Charlie Lister had astonishingly won the event a record twelve times, with successes with Larkhill Bullet in 2002, Burberry Boy in 2003, Geordie Parker in 2006, Ninja Jamie in 2008, Fear Zafonic in 2009 and 2010. His last victory came in 2017, again with Fear Zafonic to complete a hat-trick of wins with the dog.

Other races of note are the Pepsi Sprint, Derby Purse, the Fosters Cup and the Yarmouth Homefinders Veterans race.

Each evening meeting has between 11 to 14 races, which makes Yarmouth one of the best value tracks we have reviewed. In 2018 the venue signing a deal with ARC (Arena Racing Company) to host races every Monday and Thursday.

Interesting Facts about the Stadium

Yarmouth greyhound stadium owes its very existence to Clapton stadium, which was over 130 miles away and closed in 1974. In 1928, professional gamblers Len Franklin & Ernie Wedon visited Clapton and watched whippet racing and decided to invest money made from investing in stocks and shares in building a new stadium at Yarmouth. Originally a ‘flapping track’ (an independent track) it opened for business on Good Friday in 1932. The partners then leased the field adjacent to the stadium and applied for planning permission to build a new stadium on this ground. When this permission was denied, Franklin and Wedon appealed to the government who eventually overturned the refusal and gave the green light for building to start. Work commenced and was completed in 1939. A grand opening was planned for the following year. In a cruel twist of fate, the date chosen to open was 11th May 1940. This would turn out to be the exact day that Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands and Belgium. Fearful of a German invasion of Britain, Yarmouth was evacuated, and the stadium was closed before it even opened and was taken over by the fire brigade. The stadium finally opened after the war, and on 7th December 1946, the first customers entered the venue.

Yarmouth, like many other greyhound stadiums in Britain, works closely with charities to re-home the Yarmouth greyhounds when their racing days are over. The stadium’s website claims that once greyhounds retire, they become the most docile and laziest of pets. So, what better way to celebrate your new addition to the family than by replaying his former glory days by watching his races? This is a service that Yarmouth stadium offers. For a small fee, they will provide a DVD featuring your pet racing, all you need to do is give the greyhound’s racing name and the date and race number (they provide a link to make that information easy to find) and they will do the rest. For a little extra charge, they will print a unique DVD sleeve with your dog’s face on it. We love this idea!

The Best Site for Yarmouth Dog Racing

Despite having origins going back to 1928, Yarmouth has a distinctly modern feel to it. The place is clean and the staff are some of the friendliest we have encountered. With the stadium located in a holiday hotspot, there seems to be a more exciting atmosphere and a feel-good factor about the place. With an average of 12 races per night, the stadium offers good value for money, and overall it offers a great night out for all the family.
